The
Itinerant Teacher role is very unique; in fact Port Hedland SOTA has
the only Itinerant Teacher in all of WA! This role requires high level
interpersonal skills, stamina, a collaborative/team approach, strong
multi year level teaching skills and a high degree of flexibility.
Whilst
visiting families, the Itinerant Teacher aims to build strong relationships
with students and home tutors, promote the school and its directions,
work as a team member even though physically separated from other
staff for the majority of the week, gather and feedback information
that assists the teacher to better understand and cater for needs
of the students and use their knowledge of students, and teaching
and learning, to assist class teachers in planning strategies and
learning programmes.
The
Itinerant Teacher travels and lives in isolated areas on a weekly
basis, staying in a variety of accommodation including family homes,
staff quarters or even the occasional swag. Travelling usually occurs
for approximately four days per week and is supported by “Tamika”,
our trust school 4WD.
The
Itinerant Teacher role has been a fantastic experience thus far in
2009 and I am thoroughly looking forward to the rest of the year!
