A
much anticipated event in our school year is the Home Tutors’
Seminar at the end of Term One. This event brings together the vast
majority of the school community and operates with a dual focus. As
suggested by the name, these four or five days provide an opportunity
for parents and tutors to be upskilled in areas relating to School
Plan priorities, other curriculum areas and strategies for motivating
children and managing their home classroom. It is also a time for
sharing ideas with other tutors and meeting with teachers to explore
how best to make learning fun and appropriate for their children.
In 2009, our key themes within the adults’ programme were Writing,
Spelling and Grammar, as well as Problem Solving (Maths). These were
facilitated by Anna Alderson (Learning Conversations).
Parallel
to this programme runs the children’s programme and a crèche
for babies and toddlers; this seminar is truly a family affair. In
2009, the children travelled from our accommodation at Pilbara Camp
School to Pegs Creek Primary School in Karratha each day where we
were fortunate to have rooms allocated for our sole use. Much of the
children’s programme revolved around thematic work with Hardey
and Rebecca from “Flying Heart Productions”. This explored
story telling through drama and body movement and resulted in an excellent
final performance by the children, for the adults, at the conclusion
of the Seminar.

Tutors’ Seminar continues to be a “not to miss”
event in our school calendar and not only provides learning opportunities
for tutors and students, but enables attendees to develop friendships
and a support network, which is so important for isolated families.
In many respects “Seminar”, as it is known, sets the tone
for the rest of the school year.
